I couldn’t resist this story from the AP wire. I cannot fathom how a religion can split so severely, while claiming to believe in the exact same mysteries, that there are rumbles over the janitorial work in the holiest place in Christendom. Talk about angels and the head of a pin.
Reminds me of a story about the minor-league Baptist church (I was going to make up a sarcastic name for it, but I’m refraining) my mom attended in her later years. The church was in a crummy building on the outskirts of Chillicothe, Illinois. There were a couple (white woman, black man) who, although unmarried, had a child. Some members of the parish were outraged and wanted them kicked out of the church. (I cannot tell you whether there was racism involved, or just cussedness about the holy institution of marriage). Well, the dispute got so intense that the church, which probably had a membership under a hundred to start with, split up. So the pastor, who did not favor punishing the sinners in question, opened up shop in a similarly crummy building in Mossville, about 8 miles away. I’m happy to say my mom went with this group.
I’m still laughing about these Greeks and Armenians duking it out with brooms!
