Tree & Sky

Tree & Sky, originally uploaded by twoblueday. One stormy day in Longwood, Florida.

Computers: ya gotta love/hate ‘em.

I have two computers. A Windows XP/Sony VAIO desktop and a Mac 12″ iBook. Sony runs 3.0 gigaherz, Mac at 770megaherz. In every statistical comparison, the Sony wins, but, as with athletic events, the only statistic which counts is the final score. So, what’s the score?

Let’s start with money. There was no significant difference in the purchase prices. All even through first quarter. I have purchased the following just to “protect” and “maintain” the Sony/Windows machine: Norton Systemworks; Norton Internet Security; Webroot Spy Sweeper; Webroot Window Washer; PC Tools Registry Mechanic; Kaspersky Antivirus, and maybe more stuff I’ve forgotten. Hundreds of dollars. For the Mac I’ve spent exactly nothing, nada, zero, to “protect” and “maintain” the machine. Apple way ahead at halftime.

Let’s go to time wasted. I have spent countless hours running, monitoring, and screwing around with the various programs I’ve purchased to “protect” and “maintain” the Sony, zero hours for the Mac. I have many, many episodes of unaccountable slowdowns on the Sony; none on the Mac. A slew of seemingly insoluble problems with the Sony (for instance, at times, for no reason I can fathom, it refuses to play flash files, so I can’t watch little videos people put in their blogs, can’t watch UTube, can’t watch Viral Video, etc., etc.–one of those times is now. I scour for solutions and either find none, or things so technical Bill Gates couldn’t do them). Apple runs on. Overall, its 770 clock speed has buried the 3.0 clock speed of the Windows rig.

Let’s go to programs. There have been absolutely no programs, not one, which I have desired to run, or had a use for, which was not available for the Mac, and didn’t, usually, run better on the Mac and in a more user-friendly fashion.

So, third and fourth quarters to the Mac. Can anyone guess what my next new computer will be? Oh, yeah, I don’t see any reason I would install Windows XP (or Vista) on any such new Mac, even though I could. Why would I waste the money? (They only come with Mac OSX, you have to purchase and install the Windows crap if you want it.

Oh, in fairness, the Sony does have a really cool monitor.

I am now, and have always been, a Mac girl. It’s all Mr. Chili’s fault; he has to work on PC systems at work, but his introduction into the world of computers (well, beyond his experience with his father’s very first computer at the university, which came with actual PUNCH CARDS), was with Macs. There isn’t a non-Apple product in the Chili household, though we do love Sony A/V equipment (tuners, T.V.s, DVD players, TiVos, that sort of thing…)

A couple of years ago my office converted partially to Mac so now I’m almost all Mac all the time. It’s such a chore to bring my brain to the PC world when something goes wrong on one of the PCs, and it’s often.

That is a great picture. Wow.

However… you can hook your sony monitor up to your mac!

I have a nice big iMac and I run dual monitors on it… Its FANTASTIC!
