A Rose for Mike

rose-2605-edit-opt.jpg
This is a late-blooming rose in my garden. The background is buckwheat hulls I’ve taken to using as mulch. It’s more expensive than regular mulch, but it is really attractive, in my view, and allegedly does not acidify the soil.

Looking forward to a visit from my older brother today. We’ll round him up at Logan and spend a little time in Boston, he’s never seen Quincy Market, so that’ll probably be our first stop. Tomorrow night I’ve gotten tickets to see Richard Shindell play in Fall River, so he and I will go there while my honey goes to see her family for Yom Kippur. She and I went to Worcester yesterday, and, among other things, visited the Jewish cemetery where her family members are buried. I always find it touching to go there with her. Almost all the headstones have pebbles placed on them by family members who visit. It’s a tradition.

Last night we visited, very briefly, with a gentleman we’ll probably never see again in this life. He is terminally ill. He was a teacher and mentor to the two fine sons of good friends of ours here on Cape Cod. A lifelong relationship was established back then. Now both young men are grown, and enjoying life and their careers. We are just acquainted with the gentleman through this family. One of his students, if I remember correctly, was the current king of Jordan.

Drove the little hybrid to Worcester and back yesterday. Lots of 65 mph highway, a fair amount of driving around Worcester, and (confession) a bit of speeding on the way home to get my honey to an appointment at the spa (like driving 70 or so, including a stretch at 77–those familiar with rte. 495 which leads from Cape Cod up past the Mass Pike will understand that the speed limit along there is honored more in the breach than the observance, and our bit of such homage was not even noticeable out there). It was unusual for me since I tend to be a strict observer of speed limits (over in the right lane, mind you). Felt pretty swashbuckling out there! The little car was very well behaved at speed, and the gerbils inside did not voice any complaints. We got gas for the first time, it was cool to pump under 10 gallons and know that it represented in excess of 400 miles! It was also nice to get gas (in Worcester) for some $.23 per gallon less than we generally pay on Cape Cod.
Current readings: 554.7 miles at 44.1 miles per gallon.

On 495, if you’re not speeding, you’ll get run over. Speeding is actually SAFER than not on that stretch of road.
