I took this picture at Coonamessett Farm. I had never seen a lamb so cute. Coonamessett Farm is a place where you buy a membership and can pick vegetables and berries and such. We really like it there. They have some fun prepared foods, too. Sometimes they have meals, music even. It’s in a section of Falmouth called Hatchville, out in the sticks. They just added a wind generator.
So, the new hybrid is up to 230.6 miles. We drove off Cape Cod to Medway to visit friends, and then to a nice discount mall, which is always packed with people, including many speaking foreign languages. Then back home. This driving included town driving, some hilly areas, some 55 mph, and some 65 mph. So, a blend of driving conditions. Average miles per gallon from the beginning to now is 45.4. Not too bad. I had heard that the hybrids do not generally get the predicted mileage, but so far it’s pretty darn close. I think the predicted blended driving mileage for this car is 46. The Prius (as opposed to our Honda) has reduced the mileage claimed in past years, and is also at 46, I think. It’s likely, according to what I read and see on the TV, that hybrid/battery cars are a sort of interim solution to reducing oil consumption and carbon emissions. A recent news report had a hybrid/capacitor car winning a 24 hour race in Japan. Capacitors have the advantage over batteries of being much lighter. Maybe my next car will be one of those. On the horizon are, of course, fuel-cell cars and/or hydrogen-fueled cars. I read that recently a scientist applied some radio frequency to salt water and got it to burn, meaning, I gathered, that the hydrogen and oxygen separated, and then, instead of reuniting as water, burned (which produces water vapor anyway, I think). Could we power our future cars with water? Since salt water was used (if I got it right) the problem would be what to do with the sodium.
Football season is here. I am pretty much a lukewarm fan, and much prefer the college game to the pro (I have no favorite pro team and I don’t bet). My old law school, Florida, is starting out well, 3-0, and kicked Tennessee’s butt yesterday. My old undergraduate school Southern Illinois, also won yesterday. I cannot imagine actually going to a game, as much as I dislike crowds (I call it human claustrophobia). Rah.
All for now.
